Here at Pivonka Chiropractic, chiropractors in Gilbert, we know that regardless of what it is in life, what you put in is what you get out. The amount and quality of effort that you put into something directly correlates with your results. If you spend a lot of quality time on a project for work or school more than likely your project will meet or hopefully exceed expectations. If you put quality fuel, oil, parts, and equipment in your vehicle it will operate at a superior level. You could put water in your gas tank; it would be much easier and cost effective; however the cars performance would greatly suffer. On a daily basis I see people filling their bodies’ fuel tanks (their stomachs) with waste. Just because something from a dollar menu may be cheap, easy, and will fill you up doesn’t make it quality fuel for your body. Do you often feel tired or sluggish? Have you thought about the quality of food you put in your body?
If you are looking for quality results from a workout, whether your goal is weight loss or muscle growth, your results are going to be directly affected by what you are using to fuel your body and muscles. Sugary cereals and fake meat products may be easy to get your hands on because overly processed food is everywhere, but are these fuel sources worthy of your body? Many people use workouts as an excuse to not clean up their diets. I hear things all the time like” I don’t need to eat right, that’s why I go to the gym.” or “I know I shouldn’t eat that, but I will just do extra cardio tonight.” Statements like these totally defeat the purpose of working out. I work out to be stronger and better than I was before my work out. Why just maintain the physique or abilities you have now? Pivonka Chiropractics challenge to you is to give your body the best fuel available and see the possibilities. When you give your body exactly what it needs you will be surprised at what your body will give back. You will be stronger and leaner than you ever thought possible. You are worth the extra effort it takes to eat right.

Most people who go to a Chiropractor in Gilbert will eventually undergo a leg check. This means that the Chiropractor will check the length of your legs either with you laying on your stomach or back. If the legs are uneven then a problem aka Subluxation is present. An adjustment is then rendered and the legs are checked again and they should be balanced. In Chiropractic college I practiced this type of technique and I had some patients that eventually had even legs on a follow up visit but some of my patients would always come back with the same short leg that never got better. So this lead me to think maybe I was missing something. So I began to investigate other techniques which lead me to the method I practice today which is called Chiropractic Biophysics.
Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) is a structural technique with a treatment goal of restoring the spine and posture to as near the normal position as possible. I look at it like orthodontics for the spine. One of the unique things that CBP does is actually evaluate if a patient has a real anatomically short leg. In my 20 years of practice it has been my experience that a large portion of the population has an anatomically short leg of 1/4 to 1/2 inch or more. I would estimate about 40% of all of our patients have one. The problem with old school chiropractic methods is that they believe that they can get that leg to balance with adjustments and even physical therapists think they can exercise an anatomical leg problem away. The reality is that adjustments and exercises are not going to make your bones grow longer. This is a permanent issue that in most situations develops in childhood and is passed as a genetic trait through families. So the only way to fix it is to compensate for the shortness, which is typically done with a heel lift in the shoe or a sole lift on the bottom of the shoe.
People with anatomically short legs present with a very similar pain and posture pattern. They all typically have pain in the lower back or hip or both. They typically shift their torso to the short side and the shoulder on the short side goes higher as a reaction and they stand heavier to one foot. This uneven loading on the one side will cause problems in the foot, knee, hip and lower back on that side. I have seen patients come in with legs that are 1 and a half inches short and they are putting 40 pounds more weight on the short leg. To determine if someone has an anatomical short leg an x-ray evaluation should be performed. At Pivonka Chiropractic, chiropractors in gilbert, we take a specialized X-ray view called a modified Ferguson View. This allows us to look directly at the pelvis at its natural angle to assess very accurately if someone has an anatomical short leg and if the leg is short we measure how short it is and prescribe a heel lift to fix the problem. Once the heel lift is instituted it is amazing to see the changes in the posture that occur and how the symptoms in the lower back and short leg disappear.
So the next time you go to your chiropractor and he checks your legs ask him or her if its an anatomical problem and what they are going to do about it. If the answer is nothing but adjustments or exercises then you may want to reconsider your decision to go there again. At Pivonka Chiropractic in Gilbert we routinely evaluate patients for anatomical short leg and then do our best to fix the problem to ensure the best outcomes for our patients. If you are having chronic lower back pain give us a call at (480) 892-002 and let us see if your problem is due to an anatomically short leg.

What’s better to lose weight exercise or diet? A common question at Pivonka Chiropractic, as chiropractors in Gilbert, lets explore the answer. The average female age 35 who weighs 150 pounds and is mildly active will burn 2200 calories per day per the USDA BMI calculator. Lets assume she is burning 600 calories in 7 hours of sleep leaving 17 hours of awake time to burn 1600 calories for an average of 94 calories per hour. She optimally would like to lose about 25 pounds and get back to 125 pounds. She gets dedicated and goes to the gym and begins hitting the stair climber and starts watching what she’s eating. The USDA says the average american will ingest about 2700 calories/day. So right off the bat our average lady has to drop 500 calories per day from her diet just to ensure she doesn’t add any more fat.
Now she wants to lose 25 pounds of fat. Each pound of fat equals 3500 calories so to lose 25 pounds she is going to have to burn off 87,500 calories extra over time while controlling her consumption to 2200 calories per day. In an hour on the stair climber at the gym she burns 200 calories. She thinks thats great. Upon further review though did she really burn 200 extra calories. No! She only burned an extra 106 because just doing average stuff she burns 94 per hour, so 200-94=106 net extra calories were burned for 1 hour of huffing and puffing on the stair climber. At this rate to burn 87,500 calories to lose 25 pounds of fat she will have to hit that stair climber for 825 days or 2.25 years. Now she could speed that up if she dropped her consumption to 1500 calories per day and stepped for 1.5 hours per day but still she is going to have to spend a lot of time on that stair climber to get those results.
Now lets compare a person using a diet centered weight loss method like Ideal Protein. Same women who wants to lose 25 pounds. Her calories per day are restricted to about 500-600 from carbohydrates and proteins then she consumes from Ideal Protein packets and one meal of lean meat and vegetables. This will eventually put her body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis is when the body switches over from using carbohydrates provided by food intake to make blood sugar and instead starts taking fat that is stored on the body and converts it into what is called a ketone body, which is processed by the liver into blood sugar. So she will now start to burn 1700 calories per day of fat. So to lose 25 pounds she will need only 7-8 weeks to achieve her goal. WOW! That is a lot less time than using the stair climber and she didn’t have to exercise at all.
When she ultimately reaches her goal weight she will be slowly transitioned back into normal eating over about a month and a half and then instructed on how to properly combine foods and limit calories to ensure that she doesn’t over consume and regain her weight. At this point she can now begin meaningful exercise and keep herself fit and trim without worrying about having to lose that weight. So the above example clearly shows the benefits of using a diet based weight loss program over an exercise weight loss program.
