— A different way to look at exercise —
Traditionally in society we are taught that to be fit and strong for optimal health you have to exercise frequently combining both weight training and cardiovascular workouts at least 5-6 days per week.
We Promote It
Even our office used to promote this style of workout. However, what we commonly saw was that people would start a workout regimen only to fail at it because they injured themselves or they did not see any gains from the hours that they were putting in became frustrated and quit. Pivonka Chiropractic in Gilbert has always been about and will always be about “Helping Families Achieve and Maintain Better Health” that has been our mission from day one. Exercise is a very important part of that paradigm of achieving better health, but exercise shouldn’t injure you and you should be seeing results from it. Sadly we just were not seeing people achieving those goals. So we began to think that maybe its not the fault of the people but the fault of the exercise programs that the people were using, such as P90X, crossfit, running, plyometrics or just plain old aerobics and weights. So we began to investigate new ways of performing meaningful exercise that would benefit the majority of people.
Body by Science
This investigation lead us to a book called “Body by Science” written by Doug McGuff, M.D. and John Little about High Intensity Super Slow Training . This book was revolutionary in our understanding of exercise and its application. This book introduced us to concepts about exercise that sounded initially completely foreign and frankly crazy, but upon further review actually make perfect sense and are extremely effective, all while being grounded in the latest research on exercise and fitness and its relationship to health. So, as always, Dr. Patty and myself began to follow the Body by Science workout regimen to see if it truly produced the results it says and WOW! were we amazed. So what makes this routine better and more effective? Well let me list the 4 major benefits.
- 1) Traditional programs preach an average of 3-5 days per week frequency of working out that allows very little healing time between workouts. Body by Science says ONE (1) workout per week and sometimes even less to allow maximum healing between workouts, hence you don’t break down. WOW what a time savings and your allowed to heal between!
- 2) Traditional programs preach an average of 45 mins to an hour or more for each workout. Body by Science says 20 minutes per workout. WOW again what a time savings!
- 3) Traditional weight programs preach multiple sets of weights done in a pyramid style of progressive weight increases for a few body parts per workout. Body by Science says ONE REP per body part for 45-90 seconds until muscle failure. With a typical routine being 3-5 exercises max. This is where the high intensity comes in.
- 4) Traditional weight programs will us olympic style lifts, like bench press, deadlifts or power cleans, done with barbells, dumbells or kettle balls in an explosive, ballistic fashion. These types of lifts have a higher likely hood of producing injuries. Body by Science lifts are all done on machines that ensure safety and proper body mechanics to prevent injury. The lifts are all compound exercises done super slowly. Going super slow ensures proper form and safety and also produces an extremely high intensity to the workout that takes your entire body to temporary muscle failure in 20 minutes. So safer exercise that is short in duration but gives maximum muscular stimulation!
